 How to get Cheap Airfare

1. Use a travel agent!

Folks, these people are in business for a reason – they are really good at helping people save money. Plus, you pay NOTHING to your travel agent for his or her services; they receive their payment from the providers they help you book. Travel agents are professionals, and they know the best industry tricks to help you spend the least dough.

2. Travel mid-week.

This can be tricky if there is a certain week you’re targeting or if you’re looking to maximize your vacation time from work and tie in those weekends. If you’re willing and able to travel on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, you will find cheap flight tickets that are lower than the other days of the week. Plus, you’ll have a shorter line at the airport!

3. Travel on off-peak times.

You probably don’t relish the idea of getting everyone out of the house for a 6 a.m. flight, but you can save hundreds of dollars per flight by traveling at less “convenient” times. Just think of it – your first day of vacation won’t be entirely devoted to travel! You’ll get there early enough to enjoy the sights a bit before dinner.

4. Check alternate airports.

Look at the airport’s location on Google Maps and search for other nearby airports. Are there other airports in close enough proximity that you could fly to an alternate and drive just a little further? There are several areas where this is completely doable – Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach are only about an hour away from each other, for example.

5. Research the airlines.

Go to the destination airport’s website and check what airlines service the airport. That will help you determine what carriers you should focus on for your search.

6. Delete your cookies.

Airlines are tricky, and they can track your searches to only show you fares at the same rate or greater than what you’ve already seen. Simply delete your cookies before searching, and you’ve solved the problem!

7. Use Expedia, Travelocity, or Kayak, but book directly through the airline.

Comprehensive airline booking platforms can help in your research of available flights, but book directly through the air carrier. The airline’s fares will not be any higher than the comprehensive sites, and it’s way easier to deal directly with them if there are any unforeseen issues that might cause you to have to cancel or change flights. Keep in mind that Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, and several other airlines don’t partner with comprehensive sites, so you’ll want to research those directly on their sites.

8. Social media is your friend.

Follow airlines on social media to see rates and specials that they advertise – often before sales are published on their websites or e-blasts. Twitter and Facebook are good places to start.

9. Call customer service.

The fares on the website are usually the best you can get, but it never hurts to call the airline’s booking line to see if they can give you a better deal. The answer may be no, but give it a shot! Since my family is so large, I get a group discount. I never would have known that until I called customer service.

10. Don’t procrastinate.

It’s a good idea to buy tickets around 5-6 weeks in advance of booking a flight. You’ll have the pick of the litter as far as options go, and prices will be reasonable. The closer you get to the flight, the more prices go up.
